Hepatocellular carcinoma responds to dendritic cell therapy - case study on 14 patients treated from year 2005-2008 (Poster 47)
Jamal A. Khan and Sharmin Yaqin
Abstract: Dendritic cells (dc) are the master immune cells eliciting both arms of immunity. T cells are almost totally dependent on dc for their maturation. Naive t cells are transformed into committed t lymphocytes with the brief exposure of dc, and during this interaction the specific epitopic representation is guaranteed to pass to t cells. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is fairly resistant cancer not responding to chemotherapy or mabs. Life span and quality of life get hampered. We have treated 14 patients of HCC from the year 2005 to 2008. 7 patients responded to therapy with decrease of alfafetoprotein to half. These patients have survived on an average of 23 months with 2 patients living for 36 months. Dendritic cell therapy seems to be good option for HCC patients and a large trial is warranted.
Presented in 'Cancer Immunology and Immunotherapy: Building on Success' conference held in National Institute of Health, Bethesda, MD, USA on September 22-23, 2011.

Mrs. Aruna Tyagi, one of our patients since 2007 was diagnosed of cancer CBD involving duodenum and pancreas and operated in 2006. She received chemotherapy and radiotherapy but developed chest wall metastasis in 2007. She was operated upon for the second time and put on Denvax therapy soon after. She is since then on Denvax therapy and is free of disease clinically as well as radiologically. She is regularly examined by doctors in Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital, Delhi. Her PET CT done in February 2009 revealed disease free status. Since then she has not had any metastasis or recurrent disease. Her story was published in Mail Today Newspaper published from New Delhi on 28-4-2009. Click this link.
